Adaptive Mesh Refinement for Elliptic Interface Problems Using the Non-conforming Immersed Finite Element Method

چکیده
In this paper, an adaptive mesh refinement technique is developed and analyzed for the non-conforming immersed finite element (IFE) method proposed in [27]. The IFE method was developed for solving the second order elliptic boundary value problem with interfaces across which the coefficient may be discontinuous. The IFE method was based on a triangulation that does not need to fit the interface. One of the key ideas of IFE method is to modify the basis functions so that the natural jump conditions are satisfied across the interface. The IFE method has shown to be order of O(h) and O(h) in L norm and H norm, respectively. In order to develop the adaptive mesh refinement technique, additional priori and posterior error estimations are derived in this paper. Our new a-priori error estimation shows that the generic constant is only linearly proportional to ratio of the diffusion coefficient β− and β, which improves the corresponding result in [27]. We also show that aposteriori error estimate similar to the one obtained by Bernardi and Verfürth [4] holds for the IFE solutions. Numerical examples support our theoretical results and show that the adaptive mesh refinement strategy is effective for the IFE approximation.

متن کاملA Priori Error Estimates for Some Discontinuous Galerkin Immersed Finite Element Methods
In this paper, we derive a priori error estimates for a class of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods using immersed finite element (IFE) functions for a classic second-order elliptic interface problem. The error estimation shows that these methods can converge optimally in a mesh-dependent energy norm. The combination of IFEs and DG formulation in these methods allows local mes...
متن کاملHigher Degree Immersed Finite Element Methods for Second-order Elliptic Interface Problems
We present higher degree immersed finite element (IFE) spaces that can be used to solve two dimensional second order elliptic interface problems without requiring the mesh to be aligned with the material interfaces. The interpolation errors in the proposed piecewise p degree spaces yield optimal O(hp+1) and O(h) convergence rates in the L2 and broken H1 norms, respectively, under mesh refinemen...
متن کاملRecovery-Based Error Estimator for Interface Problems: Conforming Linear Elements
This paper studies a new recovery-based a posteriori error estimator for the conforming linear finite element approximation to elliptic interface problems. Instead of recovering the gradient in the continuous finite element space, the flux is recovered through a weighted L2 projection onto H(div) conforming finite element spaces. The resulting error estimator is analyzed by establishing the rel...
متن کاملA p-th Degree Immersed Finite Element for Boundary Value Problems with Discontinuous Coefficients
In this manuscript we present a p-th degree immersed finite element method for solving boundary value problems with discontinuous coefficients. In this method, interface jump conditions are employed in the finite element basis functions, and the mesh does not have to be aligned with coefficient discontinuity. We show that under h refinement the immersed finite element solution converges to the ...
